Since recent and recurrent droughts (in particular in 2003), maize acreage has been steadily declining and by 2006 and 2007 was less than 3 million hectares, whereas over the previous two decades it had been between 3 and 3.5 million hectares.
In 2008, acreage was back above 3 million hectares, partly because more land was being planted with grain maize.
Initial estimates for 2009 are for 1.4 million hectares of silage maize, 1.7 million hectares of grain maize, 64 000 hectares of seed maize and 19 000 hectares of sweet corn, i.e. total of 3.15 million hectares.
Over the past twenty years, the silage-to-grain breakdown has been fairly equal, with acreage changing over from one crop to the other according to climate conditions.
